Africa is the home of the most exotic coffees around the world graced and high plateaus around Mt. Kenya, the second-highest peak in Africa, is rich volcanic soil. Kenya is known for its cooperatives of smallholder farms. This coffee was processed using a fully washed method that has been a treasured tradition in the region. In the cup, it has a sparkling acidity and is finished with a delicate sweetness of hibiscus and black currants.The Baragwi Farmers Cooperative was named after the small village where it is located. It borders Ngariama and Njuki-ini to the East, Kabare and Kirima to the West; Mt Kenya to the North and the Mwea Division to the South. Rich with volcanic soil, this region is recognized for producing a smooth body that supports the dynamic acidity that makes Kenya's coffees so unique and one of a kind. The society was registered in October 1953 to promote the social and economic interests of its members. It has more than 16,892 registered members, who are drawn from the 12 wet mills that form the society. The society has a workforce of 137 staff members, 31 of whom are women.
This coffee is named for the Baragwi Cooperative who grew this coffee on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. Established several decades ago, the Baragwi Cooperative is one of the oldest farmer cooperatives in Kenya. With hard work and the goal of bringing the best Kenyan coffee to the world, the quality of their coffee continues to impress and gain international recognition.This lot was selected by our coffee buyers based on its cup quality and flavor.Our buyers were on a mission to find the very best representation of a classic fully-washed Kenyan coffee. After narrowing the selection to top 20 Kenyan samples, this coffee from Baragwi was selected as the best. The Baragwi co-op responsible for this exemplary coffee cares for their crop along the foothills of snowcapped Mt. Kenya. Their knowledge of the territory is obvious, nurturing the beans between pristine natural waters, while balancing sweet and tart flavors in masterful fashion.
